What is an electricity meter?

Electricity usage is measured in your home by an electricity meter.

• Electricity is measured in watts or kilowatts
• The amount of energy that appliances use is measured in kilowatt hours (kWh)
• 1 kWh equals 1,000 watts of electricity used in one hour

To find your home's weekly usage, read the electricity meter and check it again in 1 week. Subtract the old figure from the new.

Some newer houses have digital meters with an electronic display.
